I'm not much of a people person
Pregnancy has taught me that my body is no longer my own. Don’t mind the fact that I took a 7 hour nap yesterday. Yep, 4:30 pm to 11:30 pm was my nap time. Not planned in anyway shape or form. Last thing I remember was sitting on the couch to plan out a grocery list for dinner and I wake up starving in a pitch black family room very confused. Steve was equally confused when he walked in the door at 11: 45 pm assuming he would find me fast asleep in bed for the night. Nope, 11:30 last night meant dinnertime for me. I was awake long enough to chow down my food and off to bed again.

Go ahead, tell me what a great wife I am. j/k
Towards the end of December when Steve first called attention to the atrocity that would occur on his birthday, I started brainstorming how to combat the vindictiveness of law school. A few days later, Steve and I were in the car and his thoughts started to wander to some of his favorite memories. One memory he brought up was a spontaneous trip he took with his college friend Dave Liljenquist to Las Vegas. The purpose of the trip involved dining at Lawry ‘s Restaurant. The food had been talked up in every way possible, therefore it was a necessary expense to fly to a different state to partake of the coveted meal. While there for the day, they also made their way to a fancy shmancy barbershop where Steve claims he experienced pure bliss due to receiving the absolute best shave of his life. I had no idea shaving could be experienced in such a pampered form. Listening to him rave about living it up as a bachelor got me thinking. First off, I was somewhat jealous that his top of the list memory did not include me. Second, I figure I could one up Dave and relive the experience in an even more extraordinary fashion. Third, why shouldn’t I blow away the minute amount of money we do have and prove that being a poor newlywed is amazing? It was decided and finalized immediately in my mind that Steve was going to have an outstanding birthday whether he wanted to or not and Las Vegas would be the perfect remedy. The only problem was I had no idea how to finance a vacation because I am a school teacher hence we are poor. I started looking at our monthly expenditures and trying to sort out a way to make this trip happen. To be frank and brag about myself, I really wasn’t spending any money each month so there wasn’t going to be an easy way to pull out money for this trip without Steve noticing. The real reason I don’t spend money is I am basically too lazy to go anywhere to spend the money. There you have it folks laziness supersedes wasteful spending in my life. Ok, so there is one area that I am quite good at wasting money, groceries. My weekly grocery bill is probably ridiculously high in most people’s eyes. The bottom line is I grew up in a family where we were fed very healthy meals. Healthy, organic food is expensive. I have a hard time buying crap food. We don’t ever have much food in our fridge or pantry but the food we do have is usually expensive. I don’t feel that bad about it because I don’t really spend money on anything else so that is my justification. To make this birthday surprise happen I decided to sacrifice my love of expensive food and made a commitment to cut our grocery bill in half for the next several months. It was a hard feat. There were several nights of boxed macaroni and cheese throughout the experiment. I thought I was being majorly sneaky and oh so clever. I basically was hoarding money and Steve had no idea. That is until Steve caught me. One evening I ran to the grocery store and as I was checking out I did my regular routine of watching the total ring up and then withdrawing the remaining balance that would add up to the typical total I used to spend on groceries. As I am standing there with cash in hand I glance to my right to see Steve standing next to me staring at the cash. He had decided to come say bye to me before he headed back to the library to study. With a very curios look on his face he asked what all the cash was for. I fessed up and told him I was trying to save up for something. Since that day he has pestered me constantly about what I was saving money for and what I was scheming. Luckily, he never got close to guessing a birthday extravaganza.
I held in my plan for a total of 4 months. Fast forward through all of the planning, saving and waiting to April 30th, Steve got home from taking his final and I had 9 wrapped presents awaiting him. The first 6 boxes were just pieces of paper with clues leading up to the announcement of his actual gift. He opened them one by one and by the 4th clue he felt pretty confident he was headed to Las Vegas. When he got to the 7th and 8th box I told him he had 2 options for the final gift and he could only pick one. One box had his Las Vegas trip outlined for him. The fancier present had some random multisensory church event in Tucson that had a pretty hilarious description so I typed it up on a paper and decided to stick that in their for kicks to confuse him a little bit. As expected, he picked the fancy present and was lost for words when he opened it. He really did not know how to react. I gave out a burst of excitement and jumped up and hugged him exclaiming how fun the church program would be. He half heartedly hugged me back and had this really awkward smile on his face. I was dying; birthdays just aren’t as fun unless I get some entertainment out of it. He timidly asked if he could open the remaining box just to see what the other option was. I consented but told him he had already picked so he couldn’t have what was inside of box number 2. He quickly caught on as he opened it up and saw that Las Vegas was in the cards for him. He still was a little confused about the church event I threw in there and why I felt a need to do that. So, we are headed to Las Vegas hours after he finishes his last final on May 14th. His mood drastically changed after he figured out that there is light at the end of the tunnel and his birthday wasn’t as demoralizing as he once thought.
Oh, and as for box number 9, that was a block of Gouda cheese. My dad served his mission in Holland and has this crazy obsession with Gouda cheese. There is a constant supply at my parent’s house. Steve got addicted to it over Christmas break. The last Costco trip we made Steve spotted those enormous blocks of cheese and tried to sneak one in our cart. Being the mean wife I am, I made him go put it back and told him we couldn’t splurge on such an absurd amount of cheese. He has held that against me ever since. I gave in and got it for him as a birthday present. His reaction to receiving the smelly cheese was way more excited than getting the Las Vegas get away. I guess I figured out a cheaper way to his heart. So there you have it. Las Vegas here we come even though we are basically broke as can be!

Why does my immune system suck?
So that was part 1 of my health adventures. Part 2 started a couple days ago. I am not sure if the sickness I caught was an after effect of my wisdom teeth sickness or what but I got hit with what started off as a pretty bad cold. Sure, colds are a pain in the butt but they are manageable I guess. So I struggled through the days totally congested and progressively getting worse. Then Wednesday evening the regular course of how my colds usually go drastically shifted. I started vomiting. Yuck! I hate that sensation. So up came my dinner, which I had only eaten a small amount of because I didn’t feel well. I figured that was the end of it. Nope, my stomach hurt like I could not believe. An hour later again I was hunched over the toilet. At this point there was nothing left in my stomach to regurgitate. Well, for the next 9 hours I would be clenching the toilet seat violently vomiting all through the night. It was really odd, exactly 40 minutes would pass and I would start having sharp, aching pains in my stomach then 20 minutes later I would start vomiting and then for the next 15 minutes I would have excruciating pain in my stomach. I was so dehydrated and weak because there was not an ounce of food or water in me that by the ninth round I passed out. At that point I decided to wake up Steve at 4 a.m. because I knew I needed to get some fluids in me and my body wasn’t capable of doing that on its own. We quickly discovered that urgent care facilities are not open 24 hours so the only option was the ER which of course was the more expensive option. It was that or wait 4 more hours and I decided I probably wouldn’t do so hot 4 more rounds. The next 5 hours were spent in the ER. I was pumped up with all kinds of good stuff. Steve was a trooper and sat in a mini-chair in the room with me totally tired, reading a law school book. The doctor recommended I get a CAT scan. I didn’t really want one. I felt like I knew what was wrong with my body and I would be fine once I was hydrated again and full of the medicine that would stop me from vomiting. Somehow I got talked into it. Anyway, that was the worst decision made. I had to drink 32 ounces of this awful contrast liquid before the scan. It was seriously dreadful and my little bladder could not keep down 32 ounces of that crap. The nurse insisted I had to drink the whole thing. My stomach was bulging and the liquid was creeping up my throat. I would think they would take into consideration that I am a young female who has a smaller body than say a full grown male so I probably wouldn’t be capable of drinking that much. After every gulp I would ask Steve to take the enormous cup and go dump some out in the sink for me. He refused because he is honest like that. I was being extremely dramatic about the whole ordeal. Finally, when I had about 8 ounces left my begging and pleading paid off. After asking one more time and hearing that he refused to do that, I attempted to get out of the bed myself and get the job done. Well, I was still too weak to venture out of bed and I was so frustrated and upset that he finally gave in after watching me struggle. Down the drain went several ounces and I called it quits. So off they wheeled me for the scan. As I expected the scan indicated absolutely nothing and the pains in my stomach were from the violent vomiting. What a surprise! Now, I felt way worse than before I had gotten to the hospital. They sent me home with way too many prescriptions because that is how they do it in the medical world. Overmedicate an individual seems to be the answer for everything in their opinion. I made it home and sent Steve on several ridiculous errands because he has basically turned into my servant which I feel bad about but I really needed some help. I slept the day away yesterday and still felt awful but not throwing up anymore. Now here I am today throwing in the towel for a little longer feeling a lot better than I have the last couple of days. I still haven’t eaten any real food because that sounds like the last thing on earth I would want. So sad because usually I love food more than I can put into words. Jamba Juice has kept me going though. Yes, I made Steve drive across town yesterday to get me a Jamba. As a result, he drove around for 1 ½ hours and missed one of his law classes. He acted like it was no big deal but I know in his head he was probably having a mini-melt down. The end of the semester is quite stressful for Steve so he has been a champ with all of my dramaticness. Seriously, I am not quite sure how I did life without Steve. He is great in every sense of the word.
So there you have it. My body has kind of sucked lately. Oh, that running goal I made a few posts back has totally gone out the window. Oh well, life goes on.

Why Did I Decide Teaching Was A Good Career Choice?
Hello Jen, Anne, Beth and Devrie! So far you are the only known visitors to my lovely blog filled with pointless stories. Hopefully you’ve made your way back and happen across this personalized shout out.
Ok…so life today, let me think…I have a few funny stories floating around in my head and I am trying to decide which one to document today. I wouldn’t mind recording all of them. The problem is that I tell ridiculously long stories and really struggle leaving out the most pointless details. My friends get impatient with my ability to make it through a dialogue in a timely manner. It is something I could say I am working on but in all honesty I’m not. My husband has this awesome habit (and when I say awesome I mean not awesome at all.) of slowly walking out of the room once my stories have gone on for too long. He claims he can still hear me from the other room he’s ventured into while beginning some new task that doesn’t involve blankly staring at me watching my mouth spill out every aspect of some dramatized play by play. Oh well, 95% of the time he is a champ and he toughs it out.
This little event happened several days ago and it keeps popping into my head. In my opinion, I found the whole experience completely hilarious. Some might find it inappropriate but the majority of the world doesn’t read this so I’m not that worried about it.
I am an elementary teacher. I work with 4th, 5th and 6th ELL students and do small pull out groups throughout the school day. Out of the 4 years I have taught this gig has been the most enjoyable option in the teaching world. Prior to this school year beginning I was burnt out and ready to search for a new career. Then I happened upon this set up and hesitantly took the job. For the most part everything has gone really well this year. I definitely operate so much better with the older grades in the elementary school. 9-12 year old students are very fascinating specimens. The students I work with are really well behaved which is a change I am experiencing for the first time.
Anyway, (like I said lots of pointless details find their ways into my stories) I prepared a lesson on adjective/noun phrases. I was getting observed that day by my principal and a district evaluator. I was in the middle of the lesson with my 4th grade group. During the first few minutes of the lesson, I was having them close their eyes and touch some item and then we were connecting what they felt to an adjective word. One of the adjective words I was going over was fluffy. I originally had a small pillow I was going to use in the lesson but I ran out the door that morning without it. I decided to substitute the pillow with some craft balls that are pretty soft and could be deemed as fluffy. So we are sorting out the adjective/ noun phrases on a graphic organizer and I am orally saying the phrases we’ve created. I get to the craft balls object and read the phrase, ‘fluffy balls’. My mind immediately floods with the reaction of my 6th graders to such a phrase. I always have to be one step ahead of those 12 year olds or things can take a detrimental turn towards an inappropriate direction very rapidly. Obviously, I hadn’t thought this phrase through very well and was going through all the possible scenarios that would arise later that day with my far from innocent 6th grade group. I could hear all of their squeaky voices jabbering away about what had come out of their teacher’s mouth. So within these 30 seconds of getting caught up in the potential of what was to come, I burst out into mild chuckles with my 4th grade group sitting in front of me and the district evaluator hovering in the corner. It was as clear as day what I was laughing about and luckily not noted by the 4th graders. Of course that wasn’t the case with the evaluator who was hastily moving a pen across his pad of paper. Eventually the lesson came to an end.
I was so caught up in my double evaluations that day and I had totally forgotten about that thought until I was once again into my lesson with my 6th grade group and the words, ‘fluffy balls’ came flowing out of my mouth. I will let you conjure up all of the uproar that burst out of those students. Lets just say the rest of the half hour was basically management control. Once the phrase had been said there was no getting those crazy minds focused back onto an appropriate topic. Even though I was acting like a stern teacher trying to get back on track, the moment was pretty funny and well deserved. I should have seen it coming. Kids these days I tell ya!
Goal update: So I am on my way out to go running right now. Lets see how it goes.

I guess I just set a goal?!
It can be safely said that I am lazy, as noted by my exhaustion from the measly attempt made today. In my defense this has not always been the case. I used to be “hardcore” in the world of exercise. My college days were consumed with an obsession for running and toning. Running has always been really hard for me. I don’t have running genes in me. I never built up incredible endurance but I got pretty good at pushing through for a decent chunk of time. I ran everyday for at least 60 minutes. It was hard every time but I was capable of doing it. 60 minutes really isn’t even that much compared to true runners who are constantly training for some marathon. People like to argue that anyone can be a runner and all that other nonsense. I still think that there are people born with the genes to run and I still think that will never be me. However, the state I am in now is not me.
A couple years ago I went snowboarding and injured myself after I tried to land a jump with my left leg completely straight. My leg was useless for quite a while. I physically was not capable of running. I tried to go for a jog 3 months after my ridiculous efforts pretending like I could do tricks on a snowboard. I lasted for 30 seconds and realized that my knee was not even close to healed. I gave up on running and wasn’t that concerned about it. I was already out of the habit and didn’t care that much.
Unfortunately, the careless attitude stuck for a while. I need motivation to run again because being outside exercising makes everyone feel better and function better. I have the time so I really have no excuse not to run. Today will be documented as day one of running. Even though it was a poor attempt it was an attempt none the less. I thought it would be interesting to document each day I run to make note of the progress. Plus, I will feel more of a sense of commitment to get it done every day.
Here is a lovely picture to showcase that I did in fact go running. Even though I stopped twice, only lasted 20 minutes and ran slower than a snail I do look like I just ran a marathon. For my current condition it was a brutal 20 minutes.

Yep, First Picture!
In other news…this blog is in need of a little liveliness. I am not a picture person; therefore I never have any current pictures that showcase my life. I think Steve and I have a total of maybe 10 pictures together. We never think to document any moments or events that are picture worthy. So, I had a hard time finding one that would be appropriate for my first blog picture. Then, I stumbled on this beauty and couldn’t resist.
Background info on this very awkward, yet perfect depiction of Steve and I: I had the brilliant idea of writing thank you cards for wedding gifts and including a picture of us using the gift given. In this picture, I was testing out an apron a neighbor gave us. I also made Steve try it on too. Anyway, Steve was beginning to get bored with the whole picture taking process and decided it was time to start dancing. My sister Natalie snapped this picture at the perfect timing. This is a dance move and facial expression that Steve does often and that is my typical reaction to his attempts at dancing. My look is pretty harsh but it usually only lasts a couple seconds and turns into uncontrollable laughter. He regularly breaks out in mini dance routines in our apartment. I am sure this is information he really wants the entire internet world to know about him. The finale to his dance most likely ends in his attempt to get me involved in the hip shaking. Somehow I always end up getting tossed around like a rag doll.

Sunday Equals Church
One of the Young Woman from my ward was asked to share her testimony along with a couple other youth from various wards. I was blown away by what she stood at the pulpit and said. She emulated the nature of our Savior in every sense as she shared her knowledge and fervor for the truthfulness of the gospel and her determination to truly live her life in a manner that showcases her beliefs. Another Young Woman from my ward sang the new song that was written to accompany the theme for this year. Her testimony and faithfulness radiated as she sang each word of the song with a surety of what she was singing is true. I am immensely impressed and grateful for their strength and the way it is blessing my life.
I was reflecting on my time in the Young Women’s program and the spiritual state I was in during those years. Growing up in Mesa I was surrounded by friends that typically had the same standards and beliefs I did. I encountered trials and struggles but I had an ample supply of support from my peers. I lived a teenage life that was easily accepted and practiced by most of my friends. Living in Tucson presents a different case for the youth. The number of Latter Day Saints is smaller in this community and the challenges faced everyday in their social realm is different from what I experienced. Tonight I was thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the congregation and to be uplifted and fortified by the Young Women. I am lucky to get to spend my time with them and personally grow because of their faith. I am glad to have felt the sweet, simple and peaceful nature of the Spirit tonight. The feelings I had tonight paralleled so distinctly with feelings I had during the ages of 12-18 while attending church youth functions. The Spirit felt tonight was touching and reassuring of strength in this time and generation. I love learning from these girls every week. At first, I complained somewhat about having to go through the ritual of mutual every Tuesday evening. Mutual is actually proving to be a great source of entertainment for me. The girls are typically hilarious and have random comments and stories to share. I need to start writing down funny one liners they throw out because they are worth remembering!

A Very Long Post
Oh well, it was pretty fabulous in real life and not in a lovey dovey way but more in a surreal manner that made me appreciate the winter time for more than just it’s skiing and snowboarding potential. I spent far too many college days at the peak of dawn, shivering, slipping, huffing and puffing, freezing, struggling up steep hills trying to make it to 7 a.m. class on time. Most of the time I was late due to some winter induced accident. I can’t even count how many times my car ended up with a wheel stuck in the sidewalk gutter because I am a mess when it comes to driving in the snow/ice. Good thing there are countless masses of courteous BYU boys that radiate BYUness and often bailed me out. I couldn’t have planned it any better when my car slid into a gutter right in front of an old school Provo house where a well-built dedicated cougar resided. He came wheeling out a massive, bright yellow jack that towered over me. I had no idea jacks came in such an enormous size. Off I dashed to class while he cleaned up my mess. There are SO many assortments of people at BYU to experience and wonder about. I am sure as I ran off he was wondering a lot about me. Anything snow or car related personifies my ditzyness. Oh, the people you meet at BYU. I could write a novel on that topic. I could also write a novel on all of the times an awkward experience occurred that left fellow cougs mentally adding me to their list of peculiar BYU occurrences. I am laughing out loud thinking about some, good times to be had by all!
Moving on, I really got on a very random train of thought that didn’t really document anything of value. Christmas/Holiday (whatever you prefer) break ended 2 days ago. I miss it so much. The past 2 days I have been back at work I have gotten on the district website to count and then recount how many working days are left in the academic year. I think I might make a paper chain for amusement purposes. I did make an amazing discovery though that somehow I missed until now. I get a 2 week Spring Break! I have never had that in my entire life. For that reason alone Tucson is up a couple notches in my book. Christmas involved a lot of traveling this time around. A 17 hour car ride to Idaho made for a long day. We eventually made it there and I got to spend ample time going down memory lane with my in-laws and husband. I have to say that with every visit to Idaho (this being the third) I am always pleasantly surprised. The highlight of a week in Idaho was definitely watching Steve strap on a pair of skis. It was hilarious watching him zoom down the mountain at Bogus Basin in Boise. I don’t think his poles ever touched the ground once. They were merely for show, pointing out from both sides of his body. He mastered zipping down the mountain with crazy speed which usually resulted in a crash. The stopping part and his form were never quite conquered but who really needs those 2 components anyway.
The second favorite highlight of Idaho was waking up around 9 a.m. every morning and having Steve’s grandpa say to me, “Look, she has risen from the dead!” The Reeds are early risers. The majority of my side of the family are far from early risers. Spending the first week with Steve’s family and then transitioning to my family for the second week really showcased this. I think by the end of the two weeks most of the people residing at my parent’s condo in Park City were popping up around 11 a.m. Idaho and Utah were a great break away from everyday life. Aside from all of the driving (about 32 hours) it was relaxing. I guess driving can be categorized as relaxing too when I was sprawled over several seats sleeping most of the time.
I should probably give Utah a shout out too since Idaho got two highlighting moments. Eventually ending up separated from the rest of our massive Fielding pack and skiing on the Jupiter run at Park City with my youngest sister Natalie was pretty memorable. We made our way through some powder, trees, bumpy terrain and had the run all to ourselves. At the end of the run she exclaimed, “That was so fun! I did all of the bumpy parts perfectly and didn’t fall at all! You totally just made me a better snowboarder by taking me on that run." She continued to throw out the line about me making her a better snowboarder a few times later in the day. I have to say I am honored that my presence alone improved her snowboarding ability because other than that I am not sure what I did that helped her improve so drastically.
The 2nd moment to be remembered during the Utah week was during an intense round of board game playing with my parents, Steve and my 2 sisters. If you have played “Settlers of Catan” then you know that you have to be in it for the long hall when you sit down and roll the dice. This game is a long one, at least when I play it is. My mom was trying to block my road work I had been diligently working away on. You earn extra points if you are able to build the longest road on the board. While I was creating this amazing work of art my mom was also attempting to one up me and build a longer road. Our 2 paths were intermingling and I saw an opportunity to block her road for good. I could build a settlement right in the middle of her road. The problem was you need four specific resource cards to do this and I lacked 2 of them. I started bargaining with everyone else trying to trade for those cards. My mom had the 2 cards I needed and at first she was not going to turn them over. Then, I made this outlandish deal with her that on my next turn she could pick 2 of any of my cards she wanted. She jumped at that offer and immediately passed the cards I needed over. Bam, I used those 2 cards to throw a settlement right in the middle of her road and totally destroy her strategy. She was shocked and enraged! She jumped up from the table, threw her cards down, gave my hair a feisty tug and stomped off exclaiming she quit and was done with the game. She was not a happy camper. I was laughing so hard, it was a priceless moment. I rescinded my play because it was fairly sketchy and took back the trading of cards I did with her because she was pretty upset. The reaction made it all worth it. That game made for several heated moments. I must boast and say out of the 4 times I played, I won 2 of them (the 4th round I fell asleep before the game was over or I probably would have won that round too.) Let me tell you, I am an intense gamer.
